FORMER PRESIDENT PRANAB MUKHERJEE PASSES AWAY: CREMATED WITH STATE HONOURS

Former President Mr Pranab Mukherjee passed away

Former President and Bharat Ratna recipient Mr Pranab Mukherjee passed away on Monday. He was cremated with state honours at the Lodhi Road Crematorium on Tuesday morning. His body was kept at his residence in the national capital were several leaders and government officials including, current president Ram Nath Kovind, Vice- President Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paid their last respect to him.

Mr Mukherjee, 84, passed away on Monday. Last month, he was admitted to the hospital where he underwent brain surgery at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi. He also contracted coronavirus and was in comatose for a long time. Some hours before his death the Hospital authorities informed that his conditions have deteriorated and he was in a state of septic shock due to lung infection. The news of his death was announced by his Abhijit Mukherjee.

With a Heavy Heart, this is to inform you that my father Shri Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away despite the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital and prayers, duas and prarthanas from people throughout India! I thank all of you,” his son Abhijit Mukherjee tweeted.

Mr Mukherjee has served as a member of the parliament seven times also, have served in the cabinet of several prime ministers in his decade long career.

“Sad to hear that former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee is no more. His demise is passing of an era. A colossus in public life, he served Mother India with the spirit of a sage. The nation mourns losing one of its worthiest sons. Condolences to his family, friends & all citizens. Endowed with perspicacity and wisdom, Bharat Ratna Shri Mukherjee combined tradition and modernity. In his 5 decades long illustrious public life, he remained rooted to the ground irrespective of the exalted offices he held. He endeared himself to people across the political spectrum,” President Ram Nath Kovind said in a message. Also, the Centre has announced seven days of state mourning for the former president.
